10 Common Drone Problems and How to Fix Them

GPS errors, connection drops, gimbal faults and motor issues are all fixable. This guide covers the 10 most common drone problems with clear steps to diagnose and resolve each one.

Common drone problems troubleshooting guide for pilots

1. Drone Will Not Power On

What you see: pressing the power button does nothing, or the drone beeps and immediately shuts off.

Most likely cause: discharged battery or a faulty connection between battery and aircraft.

Fix: charge the battery fully before attempting again. If the drone still does not power on, check the battery connection contacts for debris or corrosion. Clean with a dry cloth. Try a different battery if you have one. If the issue persists with a known-good battery, the power circuit may need service.

2. GPS Signal Weak or Not Found

What you see: the app shows low satellite count, “GPS Signal Weak” warning, or the drone will not enter GPS hold mode.

Most likely cause: insufficient time to acquire satellites, obstruction, or GPS interference from nearby electronics.

Fix: move to an open area away from buildings and trees. Allow 2–3 minutes for satellite acquisition before arming. Avoid flying near large metal structures or RF transmitters. Calibrate the compass if you have moved to a significantly different location since last flight. More detail in our GPS troubleshooting support guide.

3. Controller and Drone Will Not Pair

What you see: the drone powers on but the controller cannot establish a link, or the app reports “No Signal.”

Fix: most drones require a specific pairing sequence — usually holding a button on the controller and drone simultaneously until lights blink synchronously. Check the manual for your model. If previously paired, power both off, wait 30 seconds, then power on drone first, then controller. Factory reset as a last resort. Our connection and pairing guide has step-by-step instructions.

4. App Disconnects Mid-Flight

What you see: the app loses control during flight; the drone continues on last instruction or enters RTH.

Most likely cause: Wi-Fi or Bluetooth interference, or the mobile device’s background apps closing the drone app.

Fix: disable mobile data and Bluetooth before connecting (keep Wi-Fi on for the drone’s Wi-Fi link models). Close all background apps. Ensure the phone’s Do Not Disturb is off. For controllers that use a physical cable to the phone, inspect the cable for damage and try a different cable. Switch to a 5 GHz Wi-Fi band if your drone supports it to avoid 2.4 GHz congestion.

5. Gimbal Not Leveling or Drifting

What you see: video footage shows a tilted horizon, or the gimbal wobbles continuously.

Fix: perform a gimbal calibration from the drone app (Settings → Gimbal → Auto Calibration). Ensure the drone is on a level surface during calibration. Check that the gimbal clamps or protective covers were removed before flight — this is more common than it sounds. If drift continues after calibration, a gimbal motor may need service.

6. Drone Drifts Without Input

What you see: in GPS mode, the drone slowly moves in one direction even with sticks centered.

Most likely cause: IMU or compass not calibrated.

Fix: calibrate the IMU and compass on flat, stable ground away from metal objects and electronics. Most drones walk you through this in the app. If drift persists after calibration, check for bent propellers — even minor bends cause asymmetric thrust and drift.

7. Battery Drains Unusually Fast

What you see: flight time significantly below expected, or the battery percentage drops rapidly in the first few minutes.

Most likely cause: battery nearing end of cycle life, or cell imbalance.

Fix: check the battery’s cycle count in the app. Over 200–300 cycles, capacity naturally degrades. Inspect the individual cell voltages if your battery shows them — a large variance between cells indicates imbalance. A badly imbalanced battery should be retired. Read our battery longevity guide for maintenance tips that extend pack life.

8. Video Feed Laggy or Stuttering

What you see: the live view in the app shows significant delay or frequent freezes.

Most likely cause: interference on the video transmission frequency, or the phone’s processor is overwhelmed.

Fix: switch transmission frequency (2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz) in the app. Reduce obstacles between controller and aircraft. Close background apps on the phone. Try a different device — some older phones cannot process the HD live feed at full frame rate. Reduce the video quality setting in the app as a temporary fix.

9. Compass Error on Startup

What you see: the app displays a compass error or “Compass Interference Detected” before allowing flight.

Most likely cause: the drone is near a metal surface, car, or electronic equipment that is distorting the magnetic field.

Fix: move the drone at least 5 meters away from vehicles, metal fences and electrical boxes. Avoid flying near large concrete-reinforced structures. If the error appears in an open field, recalibrate the compass following your model’s specific calibration procedure.

10. Drone Lands Unexpectedly

What you see: the drone descends and lands on its own without RTH being activated.

Most likely cause: critical battery level triggered automatic landing.

Fix: check the critical battery warning threshold in app settings — some drones default to a conservative 15–20% trigger. You can adjust this within limits. The longer-term fix is carrying spare batteries. See our full troubleshooting guide for other automatic landing triggers, including low-signal events.
